The winter is winding down as warm weather has arrived. Trails are still very skiable and it is a nice time to slow down the pace and enjoy the scenery. Soon the forest will be waking up, and the critters are already becoming more active. Creeks and streams are slowly opening up as the ice formations are eroding away. Our last lodge guests will be leaving on Friday morning and we are already looking forward to off season business and the challenges thereof. If you are planning a family or business retreat, wedding, conference or the like, Stokely Creek Lodge may be just the location that you are looking for.

The seven day forecast is predicting a generally sunny week with close to freezing temperatures at night and highs in the + 7 deg C area. This will make for very nice spring skiing. Expect it to be fast in the mornings and slowing down in the afternoon, and speeding up again towards evening. It is a great time of the year to enjoy the sunshine on skis. The lodge will stay open as long as we have reservations. We are offering incredibly good rates right now (as low as $95 per person per night all inclusive) so don’t put away your skis and snowshoes just yet!

Where else can you get comfortable accommodations, excellent meals, superb ski and snowshoe trails - the whole package for as low as $95 per person per night?
ANSWER - There is only one place in North America that will fit that bill - STOKELY CREEK LODGE.
We still have rooms available for this coming weekend. The “Ski the Lakes” of Stokely event will also be run this Saturday. Our plan is to have tracks across several area lakes with a BBQ on Walker lake in the afternoon. We will know later on today how good that track will be. Our intent is to pack the trail across the lakes this afternoon and track it in the morning. This could be the last good weekend of skiing for the season so why not take advantage of this great opportunity.

Stokely’s dining room has many windows and gives our skiing guests a great vantage point from which to take in the outside activity as they enjoy their breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. This morning there was an abundance of activity.A strong wind and blowing snow didn’t discourage the birds from flocking to our bird feeders or the small woodpeckers from feasting on the suet balls. All this activity attracted four black squirrels which were feeding on the fallen “crumbs” from the bird tables. Just underneath the surface of the snow the mice often make tunnels over to the fallen bird seed to partake in the mornings offeringsl. Therefore it is not surprising to see Stokley’s friendly fox appear on the scene. While the birds, squirrels, and mice feed on the bird seed, the fox is intent upon feeding upon the birds, squirrels, and mice. While it is nice to see all of this wildlife activity, it is a reminder to those in the dining room that for some, one’s next meal may be hard to come by.

Although March 20 is officially the first day of spring it doesn’t mean that “Spring” is obedient to our calendar. The truth of the matter is that Spring can appear and disappear as she pleases. One day she is here and the next day she is replaced with Winter again. Such is the nature of Miss March. That being said, spring type skiing brings with it some advantages. The days are longer, and sunsets are often breathtaking. Our skiing guests are often treated to some beautiful sunsets as they are nibbling on appetizers in the Clubhouse before dinner. The many windows on the west wall of the Clubhouse provide an excellent vantage point of taking in this re- occuring beauty of nature.Or if you are late coming in, taking advantage of those longer daylight hours, you will see some fantastic sunsets from the top of Jackrabbit Hill. Birds are also more active and their songs are in the air as they anticipate the new season coming. Trail conditions can vary quite drastically from morning to evening but usually skiing is very good if you catch the snow in the transitional stages in the mornings and evenings. Creeks and streams become more active and the sound of Stokely Creek slowly opening up has a revitalizing effect on the soul. And to the sensitive nose, the subtle fragrance of spring can be clearly detected on those warmer days. And there is definitely something to be said for skiing in shorts and T shirts. In short, don’t put those skis away so soon. We still have lots of snow on the ground at Stokely and the Ski the Lakes event on Saturday is a great time to experience spring time skiing and snowshoeing.
