Ski The Lakes of Stokely

March 6, 2012

Our focus now switches from the Wabos Loppet to Ski the Lakes this coming weekend. Between now and then the weather forecast appears to be all over the map. Warm temperatures for tomorrow and then below freezing with snow for Thursday. Then some sunshine and a low of minus 10 deg. C on Saturday (Ski the Lakes day) and a high of + 10 in the afternoon. That is a 36 deg. F swing from morning to afternoon. It will make for slow skiing in the afternoon for sure, but should make for a very nice BBQ on Walker Lake. We will have lawn chairs out there for your relaxation. You may also want to bring along sunglasses and sun screen. It is possible to get sun burn in March. This is always a fun weekend and is well worth taking in as the skiing season starts to wind down. If you don’t want to ski you can always snow shoe out to Walker Lake and take in the BBQ. After that, lodge guests will no doubt take advantage of one of our two saunas before appetizers at 5:30 and dinner at 6:30. Dinner and after dinner time will no doubt bring other pleasant surprises that are part of the Stokely Creek Lodge experience.

Ski The Lakes
March 9, 10, 11, 2012

Join us in March to take advantage of one of Stokely’s greatest features, its lakes. The ice is at its thickest in March, making it the best time to ski or snowshoe the lakes. Arrive Friday night in time for dinner and spend Saturday skiing on Evans, Stokely, Walker, Bone Sayer and Belleau Lake. After skiing or snowshoeing the lakes you will be treated to lakeside refreshments around a bonfire. Join us for this great end of season celebration when the days are longer and the weather is milder! You can experience it all from $95 to $120 (depending on the room) per person per night double occupancy from March 11-13. There will be a 10% group rate available for a couple of our larger rooms. This event has been growing in popularity so sign up soon. Call 1-866 Stokely to make reservations.

What A Weekend!

March 5, 2012

We spent Friday getting the trail groomed from Shepherd Creek through to Wabos in preparation for the Wabos Loppet. Friday night the snow squall rolled in and we had to re-groom early Saturday morning. Although this was an added complication, it made for possibly the best snow conditions for a Wabos Loppet ever. The Wabos Loppet on Saturday has its own challenges. Skiers staying at the lodge are fed an early, healthy breakfast and then board a bus to the Algoma Central Railway train station. Meanwhile, I’m jumping in my car along with all the snack bags that are handed out to participants at the train station registration. This is where the other skiers join in who were not staying at the lodge. The train departed at 9 am and I’m on my way back to the lodge after treating myself to a Tim Horton’s coffee. Once back I am told the bad news that our big groomer was broken down. After spending an hour out at the machineand being unsuccessful in getting the machine running and freezing my hands in the process, we had to abandon her and focus on the Loppet. Our other groomer picked up the slack and continued grooming for the rest of the day. Getting back to the lodge, it was time to get the BBQ warmed up and things got busy as the kitchen staff started to get ready for the BBQ lunch while I’m setting up the bar. Rusty and Lynne provided the entertainment and again did a super job. The food was again excellent and a great time was had by all. One participant, Rich Hoeg, who stayed at Stokely for the first time, and also his first time Wabos Loppet was thrilled with the event and the weekend. Rich had a camera on his head and took a whack of pictures and put them in a slide show accompanied by music. Thanks Rich for the great job and for putting that together. Visit Stokely’s Face Book to pick up the link. The Wabos Loppet is a fun / fellowship event, and this proved to be true again this year. After dinner Saturday evening a group of participants got together after dinner and had a good old fashioned “sing along” to round out a marvelous day! Forming new friendships is one of the added benefits of staying at Stokely Creek Lodge, and several new ones had their beginnings on Saturday evening. It is what is commonly referred to as the “complete Stokely experience.”

A Different Perspective

March 3, 2012

Typically, every evening at dinner time I wait until everyone is seated and I then find the empty seat and sit there. This gives me the opportunity to meet and chat with different people, and gives them (especially newcomers) the opportunity to ask me about Stokely, its history, future plans, and a number of other questions that comes to mind as their curiosity has been tweaked about this wonderful facility. Last evening it just so happened that there wasn’t a place to sit at any of the tables where the guests were sitting, so I ended up sitting at a table by myself. This actually turned out to be a good thing because it gave me the opportunity to quietly observe the “workings” of the dining room. The waitresses were efficiently serving the tables and politely responding to special requests. New guests were getting acquainted with our “regulars”, everyone was enjoying themselves, and the whole scene was a reminder to me that Stokely’s dining room is always a pleasant experience, and it is one of the important pieces of the puzzle that makes Stokely a destination that captures so many hearts!

An Opportunity Missed….

March 1, 2012

As the saying goes - “An opportunity missed is an opportunity lost.” The Wabos Loppet is less than 48 hours away and there is room for lots more. The snow and trail conditions are shaping up so nicely that it promises to be one of the best Loppet’s ever. For those of you who live in areas where the skiing conditions have been horrendous this year, here is your chance to have a “skiing good time!” Seize the opportunity while you can. Register now by calling toll free 1 866 786 5359. l

Last Chance Before Rate Increase

Feb.29, 2012

The Wabos Loppet is only a few days away. The trail is now broken in to Wabos and we have lots of snow. Conditions for the Loppet should be excellent. There is close to 3 feet of snow on the ground and we will be setting the track tomorrow. The rate increases for the Loppet tomorrow, so now is the time to register. Give us a call toll free 1-866-786-5359. There are just a few rooms left for overnight accommodation at the lodge, so if you want to stay at the lodge you need to make that reservation now.
