Every day is grocery day at Stokely Creek Lodge.
Jan.13, 2010
One of the nice things about Stokely Creek Lodge is the absence of motorized vehicles around the Lodge and chalets. Skiers park their vehicles in our parking lot, which is about 500 yards away. However, there is one small complication that arises because of that. The grocery truck delivers groceries every Wednesday morning around 8 am. This means we have to take snow machines and sleighs down to the parking lot and transport groceries back up to the Lodge. An average delivery would consist of about 120 boxes of various sizes and shapes, along with 50 pound bags of potatoes, carrots, onions, flour etc. It is an energetic way to start the day. When it is 20 deg. below zero additional challenges present themselves. Covering the groceries with thermal blankets to prevent perishables from freezing is a must. Thursday, a staff member will top up the grocery list with specialty items from Sault Ste. Marie to round out the groceries for the week. Stokely skiers (overnight guests) typically burn off a lot of calories during the day and have a chance to re-charge their batteries in Stokely’s famous dining room. There is only one complaint that I sometimes hear - The food is so delicious that skiers tend to “overcharge” their batteries. Those are the kinds of complaints that I don’t mind hearing.
