Although we haven’t had much snow in January so far, skiing conditions have been extremely good. Here’s why.
Jan.15,m 2010
The importance of rolling and compacting the snow at the beginning of the season is proven by the 7.5 inch snow base that we have on our ski trails. Remember, snow base does not mean snow accumulation, or snow depth. It is compressed snow that forms the base that you ski on. It takes more than 40 inches of snow to acquire a 7.5 inch base. Because temperatures are typically 6 to 8 degrees colder on average than in central Michigan, we do not lose our snow base once it is established. Cold nights and seasonal temperatures in the daytime has therefore led to excellent skiing conditions. Firm and fast, but not icy. When needed we send out the groomers to freshen up the trails. Conclusion: Little snow under these circumstances has actually been a good thing. Skiing in the month of January has been superb!
