Mild Winter?

Dec.20, 2008

There were some weather pessimists a few months ago predicting a mild winter. They seem to be kind of quiet lately. We’ve had a few nights in December where it has hit minus 25 deg. C, and it was minus 29 deg C here at Stokely at 8 am this morning. The cold weather has really tightened up the ski base and it is very firm and fast.

A Great Christmas Gift Idea

Dec.18, 2008

How about a gift certificate from Stokely Creek Lodge for an overnight stay, or a weekend? Or a season’s pass or membership? Or a candlelight dinner for 2? If the receiver is a cross country skier, it would be one of the nicest gifts that you could give! Stokely Creek Lodge is noted for an extensive and well groomed cross country skiing trail system, cozy overnight lodging, and excellent food!

Explanation On Snow Reporting

dEC.17, 2008

Because there seemed to be some confusion on our home page snow information, we are now giving more detailed information. Just a brief explanation of what this information means.
Snow depth is referring to the snow depth on the ground, not total snowfall to date. Snow over time will compress because of weight and wind pressure. As well, the sun will eat into the snow even when below freezing. Therefore, over time, even though temperatures remain below freezing, snow depth will decrease if there is no new snow.
Snow base is referring to the snow depth on our ski trails after the snow has been compressed and tracked by our grooming machines. Depending on the density of a new snowfall, 8 inches of snow may only produce1 or 2 inches of snow base. 5 inches of snow base is lots of base for cross country skiing.
New snow is referring to snowfall on a day to day basis. No snowfall on over a 24 hour period will result in a zero for that day.
We are also now giving our data in both metric and standard.
Hopefully, this will help clear up any confusion.

Ski Trails Still In Good Condition

Dec.15, 2008

Wow, this is some storm, and it’s still continuing. It didn’t get as warm here on the weekend as south of here. It only got as high as +2 deg. C. on Sunday evening.  We received over 6 inches of wet snow over Saturday and Sunday with some rain Sunday night. The temperature has now dropped to minus 10 deg. C. with about 4 inches of fresh snow today and more forecast for tonight. Tomorrow we will concentrate on rolling our trail system. We still have a good base, and the recent conditions will only make it better. Skiers are expected out tomorrow so we will try and get at least 20 kms rolled and tracked before they get here. Skiing is alive and well at Stokely!!!
